Hi Anne
I think that is a really interesting view. I think this certainly is
possible. As you know it is the Government's stated aim to 'open up' the
degree market and in theory anyone could seek to become a recognised
degree awarding organisation whether it be a McDonalds , a College or a
professional body. So in theory, as far as I read it the RCN or whoever
else could offer their own qualifications in OH.
Added to this is the fact that professional bodies could do this. An
example would be IEMA (The Institute of Environmental Management &
Assessment) run their own courses which lead eventually to Chartered
Environmentalist. IOSH has already set standards for any degree or MSc
which is seeking accreditation with them.
I think the question would be how far this could be taken. In theory it
could cover anyone involved in OH so it could take in the Hygienists
etc.

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] VALIDATING BODY
I am interested in the opinions of practitioners regarding validation of
OH
degree programmes in the future. The NMC are currently undertaking a
major
review of the 3rd part of the register. Baby Peter and all the
associated
child care protection issues lead me to suspect that the NMC may focus
on HV
practice. This is pure speculation on my part but I wouldn't be
surprised
whether entry to the SCPHN register in the future may be restricted to
Health visitors and (possibly School Nurses).
I am not alone in hoping that the NMC may develop a register for
advanced
practitioners - registration may be restricted to nurses holding a
qualification at Masters level. I know that Nurse Practitioners
(for those who have not come across NPs before see this website:
http://www.nursepractitioner.org.uk/)are also hoping for such a register
-
they have been waiting for more than 6years so don't hold your breath (
http://www.nursepractitioner.org.uk/Regulation.html). NPs do not have
specialist registration with the NMC - it doesn't seem to do have held
tehm
back and they go from strength to strength.
Until the mid to late 1980s the RCN validated the Occupational Health
Nursing Certificate. This validation was then handed over to the English
National Board (one of the forerunners of the NMC). I don't think that
the
opportunity for the RCN to validate future programmes currently exists
which
therefore opens up the field. The view of a number of OH nurses is that
the
NMC have a poor understanding of OHN practice. If the SCPHN register is
no
longer available, I would be interested in the views of subscribers as
to
their view of the establishment of a body who would be involved in
setting
standards for educational institutions preparing professionals
practicing in
the workplace setting across a range of professional fields such as
OHNs,
occupational therapists, physiotherapists and OH physicians.
