Now then, now then.... I'm sure we've all heard of Sir James Wilson Vincent
Savile, OBE, KCSG and that he sadly died aged 84 today.
What Sub-Brit members may not know is that he was a miner, conscripted
under the Bevin scheme and he worked in South Kirby and Waterloo Collieries
in Yorkshire.

During this time the mine roof collapsed on him and it took him 3 years to
recover from a broken back, having been told he would not walk again. He
went on to be a (poor) wrestler, club manager, entertainer, TV star and ran
over 200 marathons for charity.
In the 1980s he raised over £10 million for the building of the National
Spinal Injuries Centre at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. His fundraising for
them never stopped and currently is estimated at over £20million.
