Leeds Psychogeography Group Talk, Simon Warner, Tues October 25th 5.15pm
Dear All,
PSYCHOGEOGRAPHY TALK: The Excursion by Simon Warner
Tues October 25th, 5.15pm, University of Leeds
Full Title: The Excursion: Wordsworthian motifs in the contemporary landscape
Illustrated by video material from my exhibition Walking Out which
drew on landscape paintings in Huddersfield Art Gallery, Simon Warner
considers the challenge posed by surviving Romantic archetypes like
The Wanderer, the Ancient Monument and the Picturesque Scene. Two
films of beauty spots in the north of England show visitors sharing an
absorption in views which seems to bely their status as mere
commodified 'Heritage', whilst a third film documents the progress of
an habitual roadside walker through the urban fringe, exhibiting all
the traits of the Wordsworthian outsider at home in a sea of traffic.
Simon is a filmmaker, photographer and occasional performer with
research interests in landscape history and the history of 19th
century visual culture. Long-listed for the Northern Art Prize 2011,
he was artist-in-residence on the 36 bus between Leeds and Ripon and
is currently working with North Devon's Biosphere Reserve on an
art/science project along the River Torridge. Website:
