Apologies for cross-posting.
Hello,
Can anyone help me with the following? If anyone thinks this sounds familiar, I started this discussion at Library Camp in Birmingham but would like to take it further.
Now that the government is allowing more freedom to Colleges to provide degrees, how are LRC's responding to these challenges? Unlike the usual franchised courses where students on HE Courses have access to their affiliated University's resources as well as the college's in which they are having their lessons, the students on these new courses won't. What are you going to do to ensure they still have an HE experience?
Issues I can see are the following:
* Our opening hours do not match those of Universities, for example, some universities offer 24 hour opening.
* We don't buy as many copies of books
* We don't subscribe to as many degree level subject specific resources.
* If we start offering new subjects then this will require additional titles purchased to cover reading lists requirements.
* We would need to review coverage of our e-resources to see if needs are met.
* We would need to review our collection development policy so that we have a clear idea of our number of students/number of copies ratio. We don't offer the same type of loans as unis, e.g. they often have several available within a short loan collection.
* We may need to write a new HE related collection development policy
There was an online discussion<http://www.guardian.co.uk/higher-education-network/blog/2011/oct/19/futher-education-collaboration> about these new proposals and how they will affect the collaborative relationship between HE and FE relationships, in which access to resources is mentioned in relation to the National Student Survey. There is also a review<http://www.qaa.ac.uk/Newsroom/Consultations/Pages/OD-Review-of-HE-in-FE.aspx> of the HE in FE Quality process as the government looks at replacing the IQER. A lot is set to change and LRC's need to respond too. I would greatly appreciate your feedback and will collate the results for the list.
Kind regards
Sarah Wolfenden
