Call for papers for the conference
The Great War in Italy. Representation and Interpretation
Oxford, 20-21 April 2012

- Professor Joseph Farrell, University of Strathclyde: The Poets' War: Experiences of English and Italian Poets
- Dr Giuseppe Stellardi, University of Oxford: Esiti letterari della Grande Guerra: Ungaretti e
Gadda
Vorremmo invitare a proporre contributi nelle seguenti aree:
1. Interventismo, neutralismo e propaganda: analisi linguistica del dibattito culturale e della sua influenza sulla opinione pubblica;
2. Testimonianza; la guerra dei soldati, lettere diari e memorie;
3. La filosofia e la guerra: l’influenza del pensiero irrazionale sulla rappresentazione e l’interpretazione del conflitto;
4. La guerra a al cinema: il linguaggio dei cinegiornali, e i film sulla Grande Guerra;
5. La poesia, le novelle e i romanzi di guerra; paradigmi, temi e innovazione;

The Italian Sub-Faculty of the University of Oxford is pleased to announce the postgraduate conference ‘The Great War in Italy. Representation and Interpretation’ that will take place in Oxford, Taylorian Institution, 20th -21st April 2012.
The purpose of the conference is to bring together scholars and students interested in reflecting on the World War I as the fundamental caesura of the contemporaneity that has influenced the western thought, from philosophy to literature, in particulary in Italy. WWI was the first conflict fought with modern weapons and according to new military criteria. For the first time soldiers found themselves changed into sheer numbers; it was the first conflict filmed and recounted in movies; this war gave birth to an overheated debate on the question of interventionism and neutralism; finally WWI was the first war influenced ideologically by irrationalist philosophies. The conference aims to investigate those aspects that are still today topical (such as the issues of language and propaganda, aesthetizing war and violence, re-shaping ideologies and so on), in the face of the forthcoming hunderth anniversary of the outbreak of WWI in 2014.
This subject encourages enriching conceptual interaction and debate. As we feel that interdisciplinarity would greatly contribute to the dynamism of the discussion, students from other faculties such as cinema, philosophy and history are warmly encouraged to submit their proposals.
The conference will host two lectiones magistrales hold by
- Professor Joseph Farrell, University of Strathclyde: The Poets' War: Experiences of English and Italian Poets
- Dr Giuseppe Stellardi, University of Oxford: Esiti letterari della Grande Guerra: Ungaretti e
Gadda
We would welcome proposals on any aspect of the conference theme, particularly in the light of the following broad issues:
1. Interventionism, neutralism and propaganda: linguistic analysis of the cultural debate and its influence on public opinion;
2. Testimony: the war of the soldier, letters, diaries and memoirs;
3. Philosophy and the war: the influence of irrational thought on the representation and interpretation of the conflict;
4. The war at cinema: the language of ‘cinegiornali’ and movies on WWI;
5. The war poetry, novel and tales: paradigms, themes and innovation;
6. The Great War as a tradition: rhetorical discourse from the 30s to the 50s.
Paper abstracts of up to 300 words for 20 minutes-long papers to be given in Italian or English, should be submitted to
