Final Call for Papers (CFP2)
Title: Intersections of Displacement: Immigrant and Refugee Housing
and Homelessness Experiences I, II
AAG Annual Meeting, February 24-28, 2012, New York
http://www.aag.org/cs/events/event_detail?eventId=263
Session Organizers: Priya Kissoon (University of Toronto) and Sutama
Ghosh (Ryerson University)
Abstract: This session is dedicated to sharing geographical research
from a variety of theoretical and methodological perspectives, focused
on the heterogeneity of homelessness experiences for migrants in both
the global north and south. Research on homelessness has typically been
situated in the urban centres of the global north, and conceived as
living without permanent shelter, or in shelter unfit for human
habitation. The research presented in this session examines a continuum
of homelessness in the migration process that is as much about belonging
and emotions as it is about shelter and housing conditions. Papers in
Session I, are focused on migrant housing and homelessness in the global
north, including asylum seekers, documented and undocumented migrant
workers, elderly immigrants and sponsored spouses, while those in
Session II are focused on the global south, including internally
displaced persons and refugees in camp environments.
Abstracts of up to 250 words can be sent to Priya Kissoon or Sutama
Ghosh ([log in to unmask] or [log in to unmask]) by Monday
September 26, indicating your interest in Session I or II. Please
include author(s), affiliations, and AAG-issued pin number.
The session encourages networking and conversation on the issues of
displacement and all contributions exploring conceptual, methodological,
or empirical issues are welcome.
