Speakers : Professor Hai-Sui Yu FREng (Nottingham University)
Abstract :
The analysis and design of road pavements under moving surface
loads is an important but complex problem. Over the last three
decades, there has been a positive evolution in philosophy and
practice from a wholly empirical approach to pavement design,
supported by method and recipe specifications, towards the use of a
theoretical framework for design.
This presentation summarises recent advances in two key areas of
pavement soil mechanics that can be readily used to develop an
elastic-plastic theoretical framework for pavement design. The first
area is concerned with the development and use of elastic-plastic
shakedown theory to predict the behaviour of multilayer pavements
under moving surface loads. A new shakedown-based analytical
framework is then suggested for pavement design which can take into
account both elastic and strength properties of the materials. The
second area is on the development of more advanced soil behaviour
models to account for the significant effect of principal stress
rotation experienced by soils under moving traffic loads.
Speaker's Biography :
Hai-Sui Yu is Professor of Geotechnical Engineering and Pro-Vice
Chancellor at the University of Nottingham. In July 2011, Prof. Yu
was admitted as Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering for his
outstanding achievements in the field of geomechanics and geoengineering.
He has been a core member of TC3 of ISSMGE on Geotechnics of
Pavements since 2002. Prof. Yu chaired the 1st International
Conference on Transportation Geotechnics in August 2008. He has
written two books on 'Cavity Expansion Methods in Geomechanics'
(2000) and 'Plasticity and Geotechnics' (2006) and co-edited two
further volumes on 'Modern Trends in Geomechanics' (2006) and
'Advances in Transportation Geotechnics' (2008).
