Yes, constructive criticism from within a group can have more impact than that from a 'tutor'....... it is often so relevant and honest.....
I used to use and even simpler approach which is very graphic, but it is powerful so it should be used with care and the facilitator must always make sure that they have the time to run a constructive and supportive debrief that explores the reasons behind the positioning and what individuals could do to change their position to somewhere where they'd more like to be.
Quite simply give the group a continuum, involved: uninvolved, helpful: unhelpful, led:followed etc. and ask the group to line up placing themselves where they see themselves along that continuum.
