John Atlas, the author of "Seeds of Change: The Story of ACORN," is
coming to Queen Mary to lead a Community Organising open seminar on
Monday 31 October, 2-3pm, City Centre Seminar Room, second floor,
Francis Bancroft Building, Mile End campus, Queen Mary, University of
London, UK.
All are welcome and please spread the word.
ACORN was founded in 1970. By 2008, ACORN had 400,000 members, chapters
in 38 states and six foreign countries, with a budget of 100 million
dollars. Just two years after the election of President Obama, an ACORN
ally, the group doesn't exist.
ACORN was a pioneer in fighting poverty, shaping community organizing,
and progressive activism. How did this happen? Who is responsible for
ACORN’s demise? ACORN's self-inflicted wounds, the right wing, the
mainstream media, Obama, the Republican Party, the Democratic Party, the
left?
What can we learn from its downfall? How will this effect what you do?
Learn about what the old Acorn leaders are doing to regroup and help
build the Occupy Wall Street movement in the United States. What is
Acorn's theory of change. How does it differ from other community
organizing groups in America.
