***Please Circulate Widely***
Dear all,
In June 2011 a group of postgraduate students from the Centre for Interdisciplinary Gender Studies, Leeds University, held a one day conference entitled Thriving on the Edge of Cuts: Inspirations and Innovations in Gender Studies, in response to the British Government’s cuts to higher education funding in December 2010. Out of this conference grew this October 2011 special edition of the Graduate Journal of Social Science, edited by Alexa Athelstan, Cassandra McLuckie, Liz Mills, Angelica Pesarini and Mercedes Pöll with a contribution to the political context by Stefanie C. Boulila.
Papers by Say Burgin, Julia Horncastle, Kath Browne and Leela Bakshi, Sarah Harper, Liam Hilton, Daniela Cherubini, Carin Tunaker, Flavia Kremer and Roland Weißegger, variously, engage critically with the effects of the cuts and showcase the diversity of research happening in the field of Interdisciplinary Gender Studies today!
Attached is our newsletter, containing a link to the Thriving edition and our most recent calls for papers for two separate editions, entitled Theorising Futurities in the Social Sciences (June 2012) and Sexuality in Focus (December 2012). You can join the newsletter by following the online instructions.

Call For Papers!
We have published two new calls for papers for the forthcoming issues.
Sexuality in Focus
We invite papers for its December 2012 special edition on Sexuality in Focus. This issue is inspired by the Network of Interdisciplinary Women’s Studies in Europe (NOISE) 2011 Summer School. Central to this summer school was the exploration of what has appeared in discourses of sexualities and what has been missing. Futurities in Social Sciences
In times of crisis and social change, the question of the future can become increasingly pressing. Amidst the threat of continued economic recession, extensive budget cuts, and the growing intrusion of government into the sphere of academic research, it is understandable that the future has become shrouded in discussions of impending catastrophe and the indisputable sensation that things can only be getting worse. This edition explores this by asking how the future is being represented and played out in the contemporary social world.
