Christopher Hilton
Senior Archivist
Wellcome Library
----
Wellcome Trust
Project Archivist (Thalidomide) - 4 Month Contract
Salary on scale from £26,000 (depending on experience)
plus excellent benefits
The Wellcome Library recently acquired important papers relating to the history of thalidomide and its impact. We are subsequently looking for a Project Archivist to catalogue this material. This four month post will be based at the Wellcome Library in central London; successful applicants will be required to hold a post-graduate qualification in archive administration.
The Thalidomide Society is a campaigning and lobbying organisation that represents those affected by thalidomide in the UK; its records stretch back to the early 1960s when the effects of thalidomide first became apparent, and span campaigning material, research, fund-raising and administration. Professor Richard Smithells (1924-2002) was a paediatrician who worked extensively with those affected by thalidomide; his papers, stretching from the 1960s to the 1990s, include research and administrative documentation, printed material and images. Both collections are to be catalogued and made available in time for next year's 50th anniversary of thalidomide's withdrawal from the UK market.
As Project Archivist you will catalogue using the Library's CALM database. In addition, you would assess the material for sensitivity - setting closure periods when appropriate - identify conservation requirements, and answer any enquiries on the material that may arise during cataloguing. You will liaise with other members of the archives and manuscripts team and the wider Wellcome Library along with the Thalidomide Society and other stakeholders involved in setting up public events to mark the 2012 anniversary.
