Dear All

Many of you will be aware that Subject Centre for Sociology, Anthropology and Politics (C-SAP) will be closing in December. For the last 10 years C-SAP has existed to support development of learning and teaching in its three core disciplines and anthropology has benefited in many ways from this. However the functions of the 24 subject centres will, from now on, be taken over by the Higher Education Academy in York. The HEA has made a clear comittment to supporting teaching and learning in the disciplines so it is now up to us - the anthropology community to ensure that we take advantage of what is on offer. So as my time as the discipline associate for anthropology at C-SAP comes to an end I wanted to publicize some ways in which we can do this.



Discipline Interets Group and JISCMAIL list



The Discipline Interest Group (DIG has been established to act as a forum to discuss learning and teaching issues in the discipline, engage with the HEA and act as a support group for those wishing to apply for Academy Fellowship or bid for Academy funds. I have established a JISCMAIL list has been established to allow DIG members to communicate with each other and to receive updates on Academy activity. Learning and Teaching Development Grants



Over the next year the HEA is making £1.5 million of funding available for teaching development grants. The funding will stimulate evidence-based research and encourage innovations in learning and teaching that have the potential for sector-wide impact.

The second phase of the scheme, announced in September, is aimed at higher education institution departments, with a total of £300,000 being made available up to a maximum of £30,000 per project. Successful bids will demonstrate team impact across the department.

The closing date for bids is 23 October 2011, with successful projects expected to begin on 23 January 2012.

This phase of the teaching development grants comes less than two months after the HEA awarded grants totalling over £330,000 to 51 individuals responsible for learning and teaching. A second individual grant phase and the collaborative grant phase of the scheme will launch in early 2012.

Workshop and Seminar Series

Funding has been provided to offer a grant of £500 to institutions to host and deliver a workshop or seminar promoting research and evidence that has informed departmental policy and/or practice. Through the discipline series, institutions are invited to host and deliver a workshop or seminar on teaching and learning in a discipline context. Travel Fund



The HEA’s new UK travel fund will enable staff and students in UK higher education to exchange and disseminate good practice in learning, teaching and assessment and engage with their peers. The funding may be used to help the applicant(s) attend conferences, network meetings and special interest groups that are being run in the UK.
