Hi Ben
In addition to those already mentioned there are a handful of reports
that have looked at the influence of parents on career (and subject)
choice.
NFER How Do Young People Make Choices at 14 and 16?
https://www.education.gov.uk/publications/eOrderingDownload/RR773.pdf
p52 onwards, this one emphasizes the fact it is family that are
influential not just parents
DCSF How Young People Formulate their Views about the Future
https://www.education.gov.uk/publications/standard/publicationDetail/Pag
e1/DCSF-RB152
EngineeringUK (when they were called ETB) produced a report on parents'
perceptions of SET careers:
http://www.engineeringuk.com/viewitem.cfm?cit_id=383157
Positive Influence, parents' attitudes to their children's career
choices - Construction Skills 2007 (I can't find this one online but
have a PDF I can send you off list)
We include a parents section on our careers website,
www.futuremorph.org, and have recently been thinking about how to reach
this audience and have tried a couple of approaches. Unfortunately
saying we want to target "parents" is a bit like saying "the public" and
without a huge budget for a media campaign I think the audience has to
be broken down. Most networks specifically for parents are for those
with very young children and I'm starting to lean towards reaching
families through working with community groups instead, faith groups
perhaps.
I'd be happy to hear from anyone else grappling with the same issues.
Best wishes
Nicola

Subject: [PSCI-COM] The importance of parents
Dear all
I wonder if anybody could point me towards anything in the literature,
peer-reviewed or otherwise, on the importance and value of engaging
parents in the process of inspiring young people about STEM, and the
multiplying or reinforcing role this can play alongside direct activity
with young people themselves?
Many thanks in advance for any suggestions.
