Dear all,
Many thanks to everyone who has responded so far to my plea for information on the capabilities of InMagic DB/Textworks.
In summary, the response has been that although it is flexible, stable, and adaptable it is not really an archive friendly cataloguing tool (showing its roots as library software) because of its flat file nature and its inability to cope with hierarchies. Two of those who responded made the point that you could spend time and effort adapting it but that you could achieve similar results with spreadsheets & macros.
Others noted that it was used by some organisations when there were no real alternatives or archives specific software, but since then things have moved on as regards to functionality requirements, best practice and standards.
I should have pointed out in my original message that I'm currently working at the Royal College of General Practitioners on a temporary basis reviewing archive policies and that the College currently uses InMagic DB/Textworks. I just wanted some feedback from others who have experience of using it so I could assess its capabilities against other archives software and perhaps make a case for better alternatives.
Regards,
Gary Collins
