Dear all,
A quick follow-up, and then I hope we can put this all to rest.
I share Julia's and David's hope that we can bear with one another. I hope
that list members will feel comfortable announcing their and others' new
work where it is appropriate -- as I said. But this is a discussion list,
and I think we should revisit the issue if announcements (or complaints
about announcements, or high-handed attempts to disarm complaints about
announcements) begin to displace discussion.
Re: Anne's query on job announcements: These have from time to time been
posted in the past. My own view is that this is fine, so long as it
doesn't become overwhelming. If others feel differently, I would be very
happy to hear from you *privately*, so that we can reconsider this as time
goes on.
As I understand it, my role as moderator of the list isn't to dictate what
list members can and can't do. However, in promoting some groundrules for
conduct, I'm making suggestions that I hope will reflect common opinion
and find general favour. I'm strongly in support of community rule, and am
only promoting these groundrules in order to save time and tedium.
All the best to all,
andrew
