Roundtable Debate - What can festivals do? Festivals, creativity and
democracy Thursday 3rd November, 5-8pm Venue: Underground Bar, LSE Students Union, East Building, Houghton
Street, Holborn, London, WC2A 2AE A debate on festivals and other cultural events with festival organisers,
researchers and policy makers. The panel and the audience will reflect on
the means and ends of the social, educational and political engagement of
cultural festivals, contrasting these with more mainstream entertainment,
artistic and economic rationales. A panel of researchers who have worked on festivals and more generally on
creativity and culture-led regeneration, festival organisers reflecting on
the inclusivity of their programmes and audience, and policy makers
interested in ‘building the community’ will start off by making short
statements and launching questions for open discussion. The setting will be
convivial and the audience will actively shape the debate, with questions
and feedback. The objective is to address the ‘state of the art’ in research and
practice, explore new ways to define and measure these more elusive
impacts, and initiate collaborative ideas for future events and research.
Everyone is welcome; the event will be of particular interests for those
involved in cultural sector. The debate will last 2 hours, followed by
refreshments and an opportunity for networking. The debate will be kicked-off by: Franco Bianchini, Leeds Met University
Rod Fisher, International Intelligence on Culture
Federico Guerrieri, Transeuropa Festival
Melanie Knetsch, Festival of Social Science
Amanda Rigali, Arts Council
Pippa Smith, Brighton Festival The event is organised and moderated by Monica Sassatelli, Goldsmiths,
