Thanks for the stats. The copper figures do bear
some resemblance to the Mineral Stats but the mundic ones are quite new to me.
The sources of my information are the Traffic
Books of the Bodmin & Wadebridge Railway at TNA,
refs RAIL 57/10 to 57/18 covering 1834 to 1859,
patchily. I have read most of them and made a
note of every mine I have come across. In some
cases I have totalled the traffic generated. So
if anybody is working on mines in this area I may be able to help.
Since starting this I have had a look at 19th
century newspapers which has added some useful
detail, including a fraud. In particular the mine
was advertised for sale in February 1863 and the
following ores were mentioned: 'sulphur, mundic,
quartz, large quantities of can (fluor spar),
peach with copper ore'. It also said '10,000
tons of coppery mundic and copper are raised'.
In answer to Roger Hutchins I had heard somewhere
that Frank Parkyn had a 'stone road' to convey
clay from the Durfold works to the nearby road.
When I visited the site earlier this year there
was a clear line of granite slabs running up the
hillside from the valley bottom, but only narrow
enough for a horse, not a cart. Parkyn took over
about 1870 which is rather late for packhorses
but there were formerly metal mines here.
Hamilton Jenkin mentions Wheal Coad in 1847/8,
later Blisland Consols then Bodmin Moor Consols.
Although Jenkin says the closeness of the B&WR
was mentioned for all three I have no evidence of
traffic. I have a photo of the track if wanted.
