Dear Jenni
We operate a tariff of penalties system for offences of an academic and non-academic nature which works well.
As academic departments normally deal with first offences of academic misconduct the tariff provides a framework within which to impose penalties. It means that penalties are consistent across the University. As part of the process, when a penalty has been agreed the Dean must ratify it before it can be imposed. This provides a second check in the process ensuring that penalties across Schools are consistent.
For non-academic misconduct the tariff provides a reference point for those imposing penalties for standard offences (e.g. smoking in residences). The tariff recommends that the following factors be taken into account when imposing a penalty:
First offence
Extent of offence
Awareness of rules
Mitigating or extenuating circumstances
Consequences of penalty imposed.
This means that the penalties for two identical offences could vary. Therefore it is important to ensure that the reason for any variation in the standard penalty has been recorded.
If I can provide any further information please let me know.
Regards
Stewart

Subject: Penalty Tariff System
Dear All,
Here at the University of Nottingham, we will be reviewing our Academic Offences Policy and Procedure shortly.
We would be interested to know if any other universities currently operate a tariff system for academic offences penalities and if so, how effective you are finding it.
Any information on your systems and how they operate would be greatly appreciated.
Best wishes,
Jenni Dunne
