Dear all,
The query below was posted to the ARC Quality Practitioners' Group. A colleague has rightly identified the Complaints and Appeals Group as somewhere that might give a useful response, so I am forwarding it on to that and the existing student discipline group.
As Liz is not on our list, could you reply directly to her ([log in to unmask]).
Many thanks
Iain

Dear QPG Colleagues

------------------------------------------
Dear colleagues
I have been asked to benchmark the length of time other institutions
take to resolve student disciplinary cases.
We currently run a two tier system for resolving disciplinary cases - a
less formal paper-based system for low-level offences; and a more formal
process involving hearings where students can put their case in person
to a panel where the offence (and therefore the consequence) is more
serious.
I would therefore be grateful if you could provide me with :
(a)a brief description of the different processes you use to resolve
student disciplinary cases, and
(b)for each of the processes, the average length of time it takes for a
student to receive an outcome for their case i.e. from receipt by the
person who processes the disciplinary case and notifies the student that
disciplinary action is taking place, to the outcome of the case and
notification to the student of guilt (or innocence) and any penalty
applicable.
To clarify this point in terms of when the clock starts ticking, I am
not including the period of time that the case is being considered in
the School/faculty before a decision is taken to refer it for
disciplinary action; I only wish to look at how long a case takes to
resolve once a decision has been made to refer the case for disciplinary
action. I realise that in some institutions School or faculties may
manage their own disciplinary cases, so in those instances would request
that you explain this in your response.
I will be happy to share any information I gather if colleagues would
like to receive it.
If this is not in your remit I would be grateful if you could forward
this e-mail to the person in your institution who deals with student
disciplinary matters.
Please respond direct to me.
Many thanks
Liz
