Are lab uses Ubuntu and Redhat 64bit OS for all of our data processing.
Any of the major Linux distro's should work fine.
I would make 3 suggestions.
1) Determine what Matlab version you are going to use. Use a distro
from the qualified list.

2) Figure out who will be providing OS support. Find out what they prefer.
3) Get more RAM. Matlab is a memory hog.
