Christianity and the New Social Order - a manifesto for a fairer society by John Atherton, Chris Baker and John Reader is published on the 15th September by SPCK London.
Written as an updated version of William Temple's seminal work in 1942, Christianity and Social Order, this book seeks to address the current debate about the future of political economy and welfare in the UK with reference to wellbeing, political economy, the postsecular public square, and social welfare.
It argues for a progressive and partnership based approach to common challenges facing our society, including growing inequality, high levels of mental illbeing, threats to sustainability and lack of trust in economic and political systems.
This approach is based not only evidential enquiry and analysis, but also a recognition of the resources that religion can bring to the debate, not only in terms of material contributions, but also non-material assets in respect of ethics, discourses and normative visions of and for the common good.
Lord Layard, Labour Peer and Programme Director of the Wellbeing Programme at the London School of Economics writes in his Foreword for the book: 'This book is very timely. For some years there has been a growing disillusion with material progress as the be-all of life. Mental illness is growing among our young people, for lack of worthwhile objectives for living. We need a spiritual revival, based on permanent values and modern science. This book makes a significant contribution to that great end.'
Robert Peston, Business Editor, BBC News provides the following endorsement. 'The main debate after the great crash of 2008 has been how to mend the existing financial system. This book goes deeper to ask how and whether our capitalist model can deliver the good society. It is a valuable contribution.'
This book pertains to the following areas of teaching and research
. Postsecular theory and UK context
. Religion and Welfare and Social Policy
. Religion and Politics
. Religion and Economics
. Religion and Urban justice
