Dewey in Scotland : the Dewey Decimal Classification and Scotland 's information environment

This half-day seminar showcases recent developments of the Dewey Decimal Classification and its use in Scotland 's information environment. The event should be of interest to libraries using DDC, libraries operating in a multilingual environment, libraries operating in rural environments, museums and archives developing subject retrieval services, and teachers and promoters of Gaelic.

  Programme:

  13.30-14.00 Registration, coffee, and welcome.

  14.00-14.30 The DDC in 2011: new editions, new representations, new opportunities  / Joan Mitchell (Editor-in-Chief of the DDC)

Including publication of the new edition DDC23, a new version of WebDewey, and new ways of unlocking the value of DDC classifications in library catalogues.

 14.30-15.00 Developing Gaelic translations of the DDC Summaries / Elaine Fulton (Director of SLIC), James Beaton (Gaelic translator)

The captions of the top 3 levels of DDC (the DDC Summaries) have been translated into Scottish Gaelic. The Gaelic captions will be available for download on open license in a variety of formats, including linked data for the Semantic Web. Gaelic joins a dozen or so languages in the summaries, providing multilingual interoperability for broad subject concepts.

15.00-15.30 Going mobile with the DDC in Gaelic: report of a pilot project in Highland region / John Dempster (Highland Libraries)

A project to exploit the new Gaelic captions for the DDC Summaries is underway in Portree Library. It brings together mobile phone technologies, QR codes, and subject searches of the library catalogue. QR codes are added to library guides and displays bearing bilingual Gaelic and English captions for the top-level DDC subjects. The QR code embeds a search for that subject in the library catalogue which can be scanned by a mobile phone and carried out automatically, with the search results displayed on the user's phone.

15.30-16.00 DDC re-classification of the Research Library of National Museums Scotland / Ines Castellano ( National Museums Scotland )

The Research Library of National Museums Scotland has been reclassified to DDC during the refurbishment of the National Museum in Chambers Street , Edinburgh . NMS staff also participated in the   EDUG930: Archaeology Working Group of the European DDC Users Group and helped develop the classification of archaeology in the DDC.
