Hi,
To clarify, since a couple of people have asked, by 'principles of
science', and by this I mean what people might consider good scientific
practise.
I was meaning to some extent the 'the scientific method' --
first hit in google
http://www.uic.edu/classes/bios/bios100/labs/scimethod.htm
I'm not suggesting that posts to the list should show the same rigour as
a journal submission, but that they should follow some of the generally
accepted norms -- in the same way that these norms are often found to be
behind a good piece of science writing.
e.g. claims are justified and substantiated, appropriate references
where appropriate, good structure -- clearly having a story to tell, and
something of interest for the readers.
I realise my use of 'science list' could be misinterpreted, for which I
apologise. Firstly I didn't mean to differentiate between science and
social science. It was more I wanted to differentiate this list from
some of the lists filled with opinion, speculation and 'tittle-tattle'
that can be found online.
I used 'science' to be the all encompassing term it takes when it is
preceded by the word 'bad'. Previous posts have criticised press
articles etc. for 'bad science', reports that state things like today is
mathematically the worst/best day of the year because "scientists
say...". I was using science in the same way 'bad science' can apply
equally to social science, maths...etc.
I suppose I wanted to say that posting in this list should be examples
of 'good science communication'. I also wasn't levelling any criticism
at anyone personally, but just that we should all be mindful of what we
post, else it begins to erode the value of the list which would be a
loss of a resource.
