Dear all
The Centre for Studies of Home is a new research centre in partnership
between The Geffrye - Museum of the Home and Queen Mary, University of
London. Its co-directors are Alison Blunt (Geography, QMUL) and Eleanor
John (Head of Collections and Exhibitions, Geffrye). The centre spans
research on the home and domesticity, including everyday domestic life,
material cultures, architecture and design, to the significance of home
beyond the domestic, engaging with broader ideas about dwelling,
belonging, privacy and security.
We are emailing to invite you to the following events organized by the
centre:
- a postgraduate study day on home (1 November, Geffrye): open to all
postgraduates working on home. Please see the attached flyer for further
information and submit a brief summary of your proposed paper to Zoe
Hudson ([log in to unmask]) by Friday 23 September.
- new monthly seminar series on 'Histories of Home' at the Institute of
Historical Research on Wednesdays at 5.30. The first seminar will be
given by Robyn Dowling (Macquarie University) on Wed 12 October on
'Practices of inhabitance in large houses: comfort, privacy and status
in Sydney, Australia.' See the attached programme for the year, or visit
www.history.ac.uk/events/seminars/327 for more information.
- annual lecture (and joint inaugural lecture) to be given by Amanda
Vickery (History, QMUL) on Tuesday 22 November on 'Family life makes
Tories of us all: love and power in Georgian England' (lecture at 6.30).
