Call for participants: Workshop on 'Low-carbon cities, resilience and
social justice'
University of Birmingham, 17th of October, 2011
We are seeking participants for a one day-workshop aimed at bringing
together the wide range of scholarly and policy-orientated work on the
relationship between urban decarbonisation processes, on the one hand, and
resilience, vulnerability and justice, on the other.
Questions of vulnerability and justice in relation to low carbon
interventions in cities have rarely been discussed in a systematic and
comprehensive manner, despite the far-reaching distributional consequences
of moving towards low carbon urban futures. While it is frequently pointed
out that urban governments should embrace socially-oriented policies for
improving overall social resilience and addressing household
vulnerability, the socio-political dimensions of such efforts remain
insufficiently explored.
The workshop is funded by the UK research councils' energy programme via
the Interdisciplinary Cluster on
Energy Systems, Equity and Vulnerability, as well as the College of
Engineering at the University of Birmingham. It is, in part, organised by
the 'Energy in Birmingham' initiative and the Energy geographies working
group of the Royal Geographical Society with the Institute of British
Geographers.
Confirmed speakers include Aidan While, Anke van Hal, Arnaud Ferrand,
Isolde Devaliere, Katie Williams, Peter North, Robin Hickman, Vanesa
Castan Broto and Ute Dubois. A preliminary programme of the event is
available at:

f
Workshop spaces are limited, and will be allocated on a first-come,
first-serve basis. Please contact Dr Saska Petrova from the University of
Birmingham (at [log in to unmask]) to reserve a place. Financial
support for attending the event is available, should it be required.
