Dear all,
Thank you so much for such a fabulous discussion today. We'd like to finish today's conversation by asking those that have completed all or part of a reclassification project to share (some more of ) their wisdom with the rest of the list!
Do you have a reclassification success story that you could tell us about? What made it a success? For anyone who's worked on a reclassification project whether a "success" or not(!), is there anything that you wish you'd have known before you started?
Best wishes,
Debbie

We sold reclassification mainly by using a similar argument to Debbie's: we could gain more benefit from shelfready and sourcing classification ourselves from existing records if we were using standard modern LC, since we are obliged to persist with local modifications in the most anomalous areas until reclassification is carried out, and these take a lot more time to maintain and apply.
This argument was originally intended to apply to all collections, but in the case of law, we didn't feel that the advantages of standard LC for shelfready would compensate for the difficulties that the American bias would cause our users. We argued for the move to Moys on the grounds that it would make the law collection much easier to use.

The reclassification we are doing here is probably atypical, as we are primarily focussed on improving the (adapted) scheme that we have rather than changing to something else or bringing in a standardised version. However, I will still share my experiences on getting management buy-in. I argued that our scheme was in such a bad state, much staff time was being wasted wrestling with the scheme. Also, due to problems in our scheme, the same items were getting different classmarks, and if these were also different editions, we were unintentionally duplicating some materials. I approached it on a "wasting staff time (=money)" and "accidentally duplicating stock" double ticket.
How have you obtained management buy-in for your reclassification project?

It's been a really interesting discussion so far today. I'm interested in hearing about how you have obtained support from senior management for your project(s)?
How have you sold the benefits of reclassification to managers?
How far have your reclassification projects been aligned to other strategic priorities?
