Having read a lot of the discussion here, I realise I am in a very
fortunate position. I work in a small public library - only one access
point so we don't have to worry about other sites or council-wide
decisions. We have no political control/interference and the Chief
Librarian makes all the decisions about such things as reclassification,
in consultation with the professional librarians. Each librarian has
their own subject area and they are responsible for selecting new stock,
cataloguing and classifying it where necessary and also editing/weeding
their own areas. A couple of years ago we went with shelf-ready stock,
which did lead to a few problems as the class numbers from the supplier
tended to be longer than ours (we used to keep them as simple as
possible) but it doesn't really affect books on the same subject still
being together on the shelf. With each new edition of Dewey we do look
to see if there are any major changes in a particular area, and if so we
just gradually work our way through the books. Our total stock is about
100.000 so it isn't a major problem to deal with one area at a time.

Subject: [CIG-E-FORUM] Reclass at public libs
Hi,
I'm only lurking here because I haven't been involved in any reclass for
a long time. Also, my last post was in a large public library and any
mention of reclass was instantly greeted with a regretting smile. There
was hardly enough money for the day-to-day business so any additional
projects seemed out of the question. Even with the 22nd ed of Dewey the
affected areas weren't updated.
Apart from my own experience I get the overall impression that reclass
(or conversion) projects are mainly done/possible in HE and special
libs. True?
If anyone from a public lib is participating have you tried to get
managers on board? How did you get reclass/conversion aligned with
strategic/service plans?
Thanks,
Esther
