Hello Fiona,
I just wanted to say that we have one constituent library who is on Dewey 16, so you're not the only one in this boat--we will have quite a bit of catching up to do!
I think Celine is correct about the future of reclassification--it will be done more to allow standardization and shelf-ready materials, and much less to accommodate local customizations. I will be interested to see if the senior management at more institutions see reclassification--for the ultimate purpose of eliminating locally-applied classification and the staff time it takes--as worthy of major financial commitment in the way RFID implementation etc have been in many institutions (thus giving more of us the resources to outsource...)

Subject: [CIG-E-FORUM] Hello Everyone,
Hello Everyone,
I've joined this discussion very late in the day, but have found all your comments very interesting and helpful. I'd just like to say that for me, the prospect of shelf-ready books means that I will have to seriously address the problem of reclassification. We do try to keep up with the new editions of Dewey as they come out, but historically there are areas of our collection which are still classified according to Dewey 14! We also have sites which do not use Dewey at all.
I am looking into the possibility of using BackStage, but of course there are the financial implications. We are however gong to lose a number of cataloguing staff in the next year, so it looks as if shelf ready books will become a necessity, but unfortunately no staff to do all the preparation work needed for this.
It may be a case of living with split sequences for some time, but it's not ideal for students.
