University College London, UCL Interaction Centre
Research Associate in assessing the safety and resilience of medical devices
Starting Salary (Grade 7) £31,905 - 33,676 inclusive of London Allowance
Main Purpose
Applications are invited for the post of Research
Associate in the UCL Interaction Centre to work
under the supervision of Dr Anna Cox and in
collaboration with Prof. Ann Blandford and other
members of the CHI+MED team. This post is part of
a project that aims to make medical devices
safer. The successful candidate will be expected
to develop and test new evaluation methods that
enable stakeholders (such as manufacturers or
procurers) to assess the extent to which a
medical device supports user behavior resilient
to human error. The research will involve
applying existing methods to device designs, in
addition to developing new methods. Such methods
could include: a mobile phone app for comparing
different devices and assessing their suitability
for a planned context of use, aimed at procurers;
"serious games" for informing designers and
manufacturers about human error and interaction
design; or multimedia guidelines for design or
procurement. The postholder will also be
expected to contribute to the writing of
manuscripts and presentation of the data at
international conferences.
The post is available from November 2011, for 30 months in the first instance.
Key Requirements
Applicants should have obtained a PhD in
Human-Computer Interaction. Ideal candidates
will have a strong background in quantitative and
qualitative research methods and experience of
HCI evaluation methods. A background in method
development, application and evaluation is
desirable. Applicants should have demonstrated
potential for excellent research (e.g., as
evidenced by their publication track record in
international journals) and the capability and
motivation to collaborate within an
interdisciplinary research group. The ability to
work as part of a research team is essential.
