Subject: Seeking Associate Editor for Dictionary of Chinese Biography (Berkshire)
Berkshire Publishing Group seeks an Associate Editor to join the team developing a major scholarly reference, the four-volume Dictionary of Chinese Biography. The Associate Editor will work (from his or her home location, via email and Skype) with Editor-in-Chief Kerry Brown, head of the Asia Programme at Chatham House and leader of the Europe China Research and Advice Network, and with the publisher and editorial staff at Berkshire/Bao Publishing in Massachusetts. Applicants should have (or be working towards) a PhD in Chinese History, and will be interested in connections between ancient China and the world today. Experience in biographical research is an advantage. Dictionary of Chinese Biography: http://www.berkshirepublishing.com/brw/product.asp?projID=88
Responsibilities will include identifying appropriate senior scholars to be invited, corresponding with authors, reviewing articles, and cross-checking articles to ensure accuracy and consistency. We estimate that this will take an average of 4-5 hours per week for 6-9 months. We hope the Associate Editor will also contribute a biographical essay on his or her area of research, but this is not a requirement. There will be a modest stipend ($500-1,000), and Associate Editor will receive acknowledgement on the website, promotional materials, and in the work as Associate Editor, a set of the published work and access to the digital edition, and, immediately, a set of the five-volume Berkshire Encyclopedia of China (2009) http://www.berkshirepublishing.com/brw/product.asp?projID=65 and copy of This Is China: The First 5,000 Years http://www.berkshirepublishing.com/brw/product.asp?projID=2010. (Jonathan Spence wrote: “"It is hard to imagine that such a short book can cover such a vast span of time and space. This Is China: The First 5,000 Years will help teachers, students, and general readers alike, as they seek for a preliminary guide to the contexts and complexities of Chinese culture.")
Please email the publisher, Karen Christensen, [log in to unmask], with following: a letter of interest with some personal information including past publications and/or editorial experience; curriculum vitae; two letters of reference (these may be sent separately). Do not send attachments; instead, please include everything in the body of the email.
PS: Berkshire is in the process of inviting selected scholars and other experts to write the major biographical essays included in these volumes. We would be delighted to hear from those who might be able to contribute an essay, as well as from specialists who would be interested in helping to edit a single volume. We are also happy to hear from prospective authors, but we do not issue general calls for contributions and our authors are senior scholars specializing in the subjects they write about.
Volume 1: Xia - Tang
Volume 2: Five Dynasties - Ming
Volume 3: Qing - PRC 1979
Volume 4: PRC 1979 – present
