Questionnaire design
6 October, Pamela Campanelli
Having well-designed survey questions is important not only for data collection, but also for well-informed data analysis. This course is designed to examine the pitfalls of individual survey questions and the questionnaire as a whole, drawing from the questionnaire design literature as well as from practical examples. Key distinctions are made between interview and self-completion design (with the latter focusing on the importance of good visual layout in postal and web surveys). Traditional and innovative methods for testing questions are also introduced.
For: Anyone who is planning to write, critique or analyse a survey questionnaire.
Introduction to modelling in R
26–27 October, Paul Baxter and Andrew Blance
This course introduces participants to the R environment for statistical computing. Day 1 focuses on entering, working with and visualising data in R. Day 2 focuses on regression modelling in R, including linear, general linear, logistic and survival models. Participants can either register for both days, or for either Day 1 or Day 2, depending on their background and interests. The course has an applied focus, including practical demonstrations and example exercises.
For: Users of statistics and statisticians in any field who wish to use R for statistical analysis.
Statistical topics in engineering and manufacturing industry
2–3 November, Tim Davis and Huw Williams
This two-day course covers a broad range of statistical topics which find relevance in industrial applications, including a new approach to engineering for reliability, dimensional analysis for designing efficient experiments, and a discussion on the pro's and con's of the Six Sigma movement.
For: Industrial statisticians, statistical practitioners, engineers, and other mathematical scientists working in and around industry. This course will appeal to all statisticians who wish to improve their ability to help non-statistical clients.
Statistical issues in drug development
24–25 November, Stephen Senn
This course is based on the book Statistical Issues in Drug Development (Wiley, 1997, 2007). The course covers important issues and controversies with which statisticians working in drug development are confronted.
For: Anyone interested in fruitful dialogue between medical statisticians and the life scientists with whom they collaborate. It should be of interest not only to statisticians but also to regulatory scientists, clinical research associates and medical advisors.
Multilevel modelling
8–9 December, Harvey Goldstein and George Leckie
This two-day course is designed to give participants an introduction to the theory and application of multilevel models. The course will be based around theoretical sessions followed by ‘hands-on’ sessions illustrating the theoretical concepts. The practical sessions will use the MLwiN software package.
For: Applied quantitative researchers with an interest in the analysis of hierarchically structured data. Previous participants have included university researchers from the social sciences, medicine and public health and government statistician.
