PHD STUDENTSHIP IN APPLIED STATISTICS, Maastricht University, The Netherlands
The Department Methodology and Statistics of Maastricht University in The Netherlands, invites applications for a research studentship leading to a PhD. One of the central research themes of the department is the optimal design and analysis of nested or multilevel studies with random effect models. The department gives courses in methodology and statistics to Bachelor, Master and PhD students in Health Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, Medicine and Psychology. At the moment we offer a position for a PhD studentship.
The project: Sample size calculation for nested cost-effectiveness RCTs
The research project focuses on sample size calculation for randomized trials that evaluate both the costs and effectiveness of some intervention in case the research design is nested. Such a design may arise when a study is done among pupils nested within schools, or among patients nested within general practices. In case only the effectiveness in terms of some health outcome is evaluated, sample size formula’s are available. This projects aims at extending these formulas to studies that evaluate intervention effects simultaneously on health outcomes and costs. Formulas and guidelines for sample size calculation will be derived and tested for their robustness to small samples.
