Statistics for integrative genomic data analysis
Working at VUmc
The Biostatistics group (see http://www.vumc.com/afdelingen/epidemiology-biostatistics/research/5346018/)<http://www.vumc.com/afdelingen/epidemiology-biostatistics/research/5346018/%29> at the VU university medical center has a very active group of statisticians working on high-dimensional data analysis. The group within the Department of Epidemiology & Biostatistics has close links to the Mathematics and Statistics Department of the VU University Amsterdam, as well as to both the Microarray Facility and the Department of Pathology of the VU university medical center.
Your challenge
The project you will be working on is a case-control study, involving radiation-induced thyroid cancer patients and healthy controls, multiple molecular levels (DNA copy number, methylation, gene expression, and microRNA expression) of the samples have been characterized in high-throughput fashion. From these data, the project aims to develop multivariate statistical models that describe the mechanisms at the molecular level of the cell. This should enhance the understanding of what distinguishes the cases from the controls. The high-dimensionality of the information on and the dependency between the molecular levels make the inference of the molecular mechanisms underlying the distinction between cases and controls a statistical challenge, which is to be tackled within this project. The project is a part of the EU-funded EpiRadBio-project (FP7), which aims to unravel the effects of exposure to radiation on homo sapiens.
Your tasks will be a) the development of multivariate statistical methodology for the analysis of aforementioned data, and b) the analysis of these data, or assist others that do so.
Your profile
You have a PhD in Biostatistics or a closely related discipline. Essentials are:
* good statistical knowledge enabling the development of new models and analysis tools,
* programming skills,
* the ability to explain complex ideas to biologists/non-specialists
* affinity with genetics and biology
Previous knowledge of any of the areas involved in the project (such as multivariate statistics, high-dimensional data analysis) and of R programming are an advantage.
