DEPARTMENT OF STATISTICS
POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSISTANT
Grade 7: starting salary: £29,099 - £35,788 p.a.
Fixed term appointment of up to 7 months duration
Project : Trajectories of senescence through Markov models
A fixed-term research position of up to 7 months' duration, funded by the multidisciplinary New Dynamics of Ageing research programme <http://www.newdynamics.group.shef.ac.uk/> , is available to work with Dr David Steinsaltz on statistical issues and mathematical models of trajectories of ageing, specifically as regards the analysis of high-frequency behavioural measures of ageing in model organisms. The ideal start date would be 1 December 2011. Other starting dates may be arranged, but the funding will end, at the latest, on 30 June, 2012
The core of this project is data being generated by the Instituto Nacional de Astrofísica, Óptica y Electrónica in Puebla, Mexico <http://www.inaoep.mx/en/> , in collaboration with Professor Jim Carey of the Department of Entomology, University of California, Davis. This project aims to refine modelling techniques that are being used to understand the ageing of flies in terms of these data, both to improve the analysis and to better link the experiments to mathematical models of ageing. There will be considerable scope for developing innovative methodologies, as well as for branching out into a range of mathematical and statistical modelling questions connected to the theory of ageing.
A doctorate in a relevant scientific field, or soon to be completed. This post is intended to replace a postdoctoral research assistant who is departing early for a longer-term post. As there is only a short time remaining for this post, it would be an ideal post for someone who already has a job that he or she could interrupt or postpone, and is eager to get involved in a new project and spend time in the research environment of Oxford.
