This two day course provides an introduction to the use of Bayesian Methods in pharmaceutical drug development. The course will provide an overview of methods from the published literature of the last three decades up to the most recent developments. Software implementations and regulatory issues will be discussed as well. All methods will be illustrated by examples or case studies.
The following key topics will be included:
Introduction
Motivation and definitions
Comparison of Inference: Bayesian, frequentist and Likelihood methods
Basic Elements of Bayesian Computing
Software tools – WinBUGS, BruGS, BUGSXLA
Families of Priors
Introduction to utilities and their Uses
Benefits and issues – regulatory attitudes
Operating Characteristics and Bayesian Methods
Simple Methods
Inferences on means, variances, proportions etc.
Introduction to predictive methods
Sample size determination and Assurance
Elicitation of priors
More Advanced Methods
Meta Analysis
Incorporating historical information
Accounting for Model Uncertainty
Interim Analysis and Predictive Power
Hierarchical Models
Bayesian Adaptive Randomisation Designs
About the presenter:
Professor Andy Grieve received his Ph.D. from Nottingham University in1992 having already spent nearly 20 years in industry at Ciba-Geigy and ICI Pharmaceuticals/Zeneca. From 1995-2006 he held a variety of consulting positions in Pfizer rising to be World-Wide Head of Pfizer’s Statistical Research and Consulting Centre. In 2006 he became Professor of Medical Statistics at King’s College London where he remained until 2010 when he joined Aptiv Solutions, where he is currently SVP for Clinical Trials Methodology in Cologne. He has been involved in applying statistics to all phases of drug development from Drug Discovery, Pre-Clinical toxicology, Pharmaceutical Development, and Clinical Development to Manufacturing and Post-Marketing Surveillance. Since 1980 he has advocated an increased use of Bayesian methods in Pharmaceutical Drug Development.
