I asked a friend who replied:
without knowing the detail of the problem, the clue for me would be in the phrase " I have recompiled the program in a different basic compiler that works in Windows 7" Combined with the fact that he now has to use INPUT instead of READ, I suspect he is using a subtly different language. Computer languages evolve and change, just as operating systems do. There is a process known as "deprecation" in which features of a language are marked as "deprecated" which means that they will not be supported in later versions of the language. It's one of the joys of teaching programming that we have to deal with such issues every year!
