Thinking about this, surely the fact that the proportions aren't changing
much indicates very very strongly that it is a shortage subject,
considering what has happened to the economy over this period.
If roughly the same proportion of newly graduated engineers were employed
in 2009 as 2006 this indicates that all the competent engineers who wanted
a job got a job whatever the economy was doing - hence it was a shortage
subject.
Again one would want to compare movements of employment rate through the
economic cycle across subjects for context, before you let it anywhere
near the Guardian.
