from experience I would avoid like the plague - the manual handling / HAV risk / refuelling issues are an issue.
Likewise hand augers - if its even slightly stony ground its a real pain.
We use a pair of scissor spades 'post/shovel holers' and a post spade for this sort of work. Much cheaper and easier to log the arisings.
if you do go this route - top tip - buy the lightest set and ensure they aren't too long to fit into a car! probably about £100 is about right.
One obvious thing is avoidance of buried services as well.... don't assume gardens are service free! CAT scan, buried service plan and permit to dig system to keep your H&S in line
