I have just had another good look at the mark and it is definitely a black ink stamp. There are also a list of figures (upside down) that would seem to be a list of charges.
I agree that I have simplified copyright law but it was really off topic. I have posted a copy of the US Copyright office paper that explains these basic issues at http://dgmattichakjr.com/copyright-basics/ if you wish to chase up any details.
My only point was that it would seem that Crowley did copyright the Book of the Law. Either way I am pretty sure that it is in the public domain. I wrote to Samuel Weiser last December and they replied promptly and were matter of fact about it. I had no reason to doubt the information that I received.
