I don't quite understand your question. SPM works in MATLAB, so I
think it should just be a matter of figuring out how to use the SPM
routines for reading/writing data, and some of the principles behind
displaying images using MATLAB functions.
The flipping thing is probably just an effect of how you display the
data. If you type the following after display, then you may not see
the images upside down:
axis image xy
