Elaine,
Valid concerns but we have to move on with modern times. This means
remaining a dynamic profession which constantly examines and updates
standards to be compatible with the employers' requirements -without
compromising the OH principles.
I ensure that I keep meticulous clinical notes on anything and everything
that I do or talk with the employee or the HR. Those are the notes that I
sign, print name and add my NMC number too without any fail. These can be
traced as all notes on Health Surveillance ones must be stored under COSHH
, in some cases for up to 40 years whilst the notes on Management Referral
cases may be destroyed sooner - after the risk of litigation within 3 years
has passed... I must say regular formal guidance from our profession and
peers would be so great, a bit like what FOM does for OPs....
:)
Have a nice day everyone....Sunny in the SE!!!!

Hi
I have recently re joined the group.
Agree with Anne's reply on letter to ex employee.
I don't know about anyone else but after 23yrs in the world of OH, I am
getting very tired of the challenges we face from NON CLINICAL colleagues,
bosses etc.........
We accept, with frustration from clients, that's the norm! So we get used to
it.
Here's one, apologies if this has been addressed previously
I am going round and round a bit with this one : Electronic signatures:
What is the acceptance and how far do we go?? NMC useless I'm afraid, they
are not even looking to write guidance never mind Standards.
Older nurses like me! Have always followed the standards for records keeping
' original written signature' so here's the question???
Some providers use electronic signature pads, some pre load electronic
signatures,
How do we stand with just the name typed in on the document ie : COSHH fit
certificate, reports etc???
IT are saying typed name is all we need as we can track log on's etc.
My argument or concern is: if another person accesses my computer with my
log on they could put incorrect fitness or advice status on fit cert, it
would be a long way down the line before it was traced, by which time I
would have been suspended and stressed to hell!!
I must admit I haven't ever questioned the post offer (PEQ)online fit
certs, which are same principle, except we all know they aren't really worth
paper written on, oops! Typed on!!!
Maybe the younger OHA's have the answer from their recent studies!!
Certainly NMC don't!!!
I look forward to your reply's, I'm sure will see a range of difference in
opinions.
Many thanks
E

Hi Lesley
I think it is perfectly reasonable to send HR a copy of the email and
letter. It also would have been reasonable to have copied HR into the email
and letter in the first place as no medical confidentiality is being
breached and no medical issues are being discussed.
Best wishes
Annie.

I have been asked by the HR manager for a copy of an email and letter that I
sent to an ex employee. The employee had been dismissed the week before I
received a report from his GP. He was appealing against the dismissal and I
wrote to him and emailed him asking if he still wanted me to provide
information from the report to the employer as it may or may not have had a
bearing on his dismissal hearing appeal. I received no reply and so the info
was not disclosed. The employee has subsequently submitted a tribunal
request and HR are asking for a copy of my email to prove that he was
informed that the report had been received. The email contains no medical
info and a copy sits as a part of my OH records. If I contacted the ex
employee, I am sure that he either would not respond or refuse.
HR know that I received the report because they were sent the bill!
Your advice would be greatly appreciated as always.
Many Thanks
Lesley
