Hi Sue
I work within the NHS and am not aware of any NHS requirement that those who check BCG scars must also be able to administer BCG vaccination. What is important is that the checker has been trained and is competent in BCG scar checking.
The agency need to be aware that the presence of a scar is not a 100% guarantee of immunity only that the individual has previously been vaccinated.

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] BCG scar checks
Good afternoon
I'm hoping that someone will be able to advise me.....the provider that I work for has been approached by a nursing agency asking if we can check and verify the presence of BCG scars. We are happy to offer this as one of my colleagues has recieved appropriate training but the certificate that the agency are asking us to sign (from the previous provider) states that the checker has been appropriately trained in administration of the vaccine also. My question to the list is, is it a specific NHS requirement that the checker has also been trained in administration? If not, we could amend the form accordingly.
thank you
Sue
