I was there in 1973 when I was running a prospecting syndicate. Our group
did some preliminary test geophysical surveys, collected heavy mineral
stream concentrates and evaluated exploration risks. It was at this time
that Shetland was bearing up to concentrated oil development pressures and
we concluded that we were likely to have minimal community or stakeholder
acceptability and any proposed work had limited benefit in terms of our own
short term profile.
I have not been back since then.

Bernard asks: Has anyone on the List been to Sandlodge?
I don't know anyone in the mineralogical community who has been there and
there are no real details on Mindat, compared to most other UK minesites..
Guess for many it's the distance - I was on Orkney last June and the drive
back to Mid-Wales from Scrabster where the ferry lands was getting on for
600 miles/11 hours. Hell of a day!
