Yes, sorry Paul and Mia I should have been clearer from the outset; I mean a "WCMS" (which seems a useful acronym to me!)

Subject: Re: What would an open source museum CMS look like?
Mia - yes this confuses me all the time! I tend to assume when people are talking about a "cms" in the context of a museum (especially if in the context of documentation / cataloguing) that they (usually) mean a collections management system, but this is not always the case! Conversely, when there is discussion regarding "cms" outside the museum context, I assume that they mean content management systems.
In Mike Ellis' (excellent) book on "Managing and Growing a Cultural Heritage Web Presence" he tries to clarify things by refering to *content* management systems as WCMS (Web Content Management System), but this vocabulary is not in general circulation. There is of course also now an increasingly blurred line between the two, as we are now seeing web-based collections management systems that also manage a wider range of content than a "traditional"collections management system.
regards
Paul
