Mia - yes this confuses me all the time! I tend to assume when people are
talking about a "cms" in the context of a museum (especially if in the
context of documentation / cataloguing) that they (usually) mean a
collections management system, but this is not always the case! Conversely,
when there is discussion regarding "cms" outside the museum context, I
assume that they mean content management systems.
In Mike Ellis' (excellent) book on "Managing and Growing a Cultural Heritage
Web Presence" he tries to clarify things by refering to *content* management
systems as WCMS (Web Content Management System), but this vocabulary is not
in general circulation. There is of course also now an increasingly blurred
line between the two, as we are now seeing web-based collections management
systems that also manage a wider range of content than a
"traditional"collections management system.
