I think Cristiano raises a good point here - many seem to think that Open
Source means "free" (as in cost) and that is simply not the case, especially
in the case of complex systems (such as collections management systems...)
which require extensive amounts of configuration and customising to make
then usable and appropriate for a specific environment - this work has be
done by someone, whether it be by paid employees or external consultants.
Don't get me wrong, I think Open Source software (and Open Data) can be
fantastic, and any software that locks you in perpetuity to a proprietary
environment is clearly something to be avoided, but good software built upon
Open Source technologies can be created by commercial vendors if they have
appropriate sector experience.
On the flip side of this, not all commercial software is necessarily good,
and I've had plenty experience of commercial systems that have sucked big
time (mostly because of problematic underlying architecture, rather then the
technologies per se)....
