Dear Friends: August 22, 2011
The EPC August 2011 newsletter is now online at: http://www.euthanasiaprevention.on.ca/Newsletters/Newsletter.120.Aug.2011.pdf
Last week, I led an organizational meeting of EPC-BC in Vancouver. The meeting was incredibly successful and has led to a new 4 person leadership team under the capable direction of Dr. Will Johnston. More information concerning EPC - BC will be shared soon.
The day I arrived in Vancouver, Judge Lynn Smith decided to throw out the Farewell Foundation case, that was attempting to have Canada's assisted suicide law declared unconstitutional. The Farewell Foundation are trying to establish a "Swiss style" suicide center, similar to the Dignitas suicide center in Zurich. EPC expected the Farewell Foundation case to be thrown out because it lacked standing.

The decision by Justice Smith was correct to throw out the Farewell Foundation case, but the BCCLA (Carter/Turner) was fast-tracked by Justice Smith, a few weeks earlier, to begin on Nov. 14, 2011. The BCCLA case is trying to legalize euthanasia and assisted suicide through the court. EPC is seeking intervenor status in the BCCLA (Carter/Taylor) case, which is expected to go to the Supreme Court of Canada.

The unanimous decision of the Ontario Court of Appeal in the Rasouli case was appealled by the doctors to the Supreme Court of Canada. EPC successfully intervened in the Rasouli trial. EPC hopes that the Supreme Court will decide not hear the Rasouli case.

Massachussets may be the next state to have a voter initiative on assisted suicide during the 2012 election. People who oppose assisted suicide will need to set-up a coalition in Massachussets soon.

The new Choice is an Illusion website on euthanasia and assisted suicide is now online at: http://www.choiceillusion.org/
In Australia, the federal government is debating the Territory Rights Bill. In 1995, Australia's Northern Territory legalized euthanasia. The Northern Territory euthanasia act was overturned by Australia's federal government in 1997. The Northern Territory has not repealed its euthanasia act. IIf this new Territory rights bill is passed, it would enable the Northern Territory to once again legalize euthanasia.
Paul Russell, the founder of HOPE in Australia, and Vice Chair of the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition International wrote a good article about this new attempt to legalize euthanasia in Australia.

Please vote NO in the Australian Poll. The question is: Do you believe in legal euthanasia?
