Dear Friends:
EPC - Update - July 29, 2011
The euthanasia lobby have pushed their agenda in several countries over the past week.
1. In Canada, the BC Civil Liberties Association continues to push the Carter/Taylor case with the intent of of using the courts to strike down the laws in Canada that protect people from euthanasia and assisted suicide. The Euthanasia Prevention Coalition is seeking intervener status in this case. It will cost at least $100,000 to intervene in this case. There will be a meeting on August 18 (evening) in Vancouver concerning our response to the court cases. Please email us for the location to attend the meeting. 2. Dr. William Toffler from Portland Oregon wrote an excellent letter to the editor that was printed in the Vancouver Sun in response to the court cases in BC. Link: http://alexschadenberg.blogspot.com/2011/07/legalizing-assisted-suicide-is-mistake_29.html
3. Last month we celebrated our successful intervention in the Rasouli case. The Rasouli decision stated that doctors are required to obtain consent before they can withdraw life-sustaining treatment. We have currently raised more than $15,000 toward the $30,000 cost for our successful intervention. Great news, the Toronto Star agreed with the Rasouli decision. Donations can be made online at: http://www.euthanasiaprevention.on.ca/Donations.htm or by phoning the office or sending by mail.
Anyone who makes an online donation or calls the office to make a credit card donation will receive an e-book copy of the Family Hospice Care: Preplanning and Care Guide that is written by Harry van Bommel, who was a speaker at the recent Third International Symposium. This book has sold more than 100,000 copies world-wide. You can also request a copy of the booklet - Palliative Care Not Euthanasia by Jean Echlin.
4. Paul Russell, the director of HOPE in Australia has reported that the euthanasia bill in South Australia passed at second reading in the lower house on Wednesday. This is a shocking bill that allows euthanasia for nearly any reason. At the same time the Greens in Australia are pushing to give the territories the right to legalize euthanasia. 5. An article in the Dutch news indicates that half of the GP's in the Netherlands have felt pressured by relatives to lethally inject a patient. The article also indicates that 20% of the GP's are willing to euthanize a person who is "Tired of Living". A recent article also indicates that euthanasia of people with dementia has been accepted in the Netherlands. 6. I attended a conference on Palliative Sedation. The information that I learned at the conference was invaluable. Palliative Sedation is often abused, but the proper use of palliative sedation is not euthanasia. http://alexschadenberg.blogspot.com/2011/07/proper-use-of-palliative-sedation-is.html
7. The "M court case" in the UK concerns parents of a woman in a locked-in state. The parents have asked the court to withdraw hydration and nutrition from their daughter. She would die of euthanasia by dehydration. An excellent article was written by Nikki Kenward, a disability campaigner in the UK who had also lived in a locked-in state. 8. At the same time, last week a bill that will outlaw euthanasia by dehydration passed in the Italian lower house.

Euthanasia promoter Helga Kuhse stated in her speech to the World Federation of Right to Die Societies Conference in France - Sept 1984: "If we can get people to accept the removal of all treatment and care – especially the removal of food and fluids – they will see what a painful way this is to die, and then, in the patient’s best interests, they will accept the lethal injection."
We need your support. Sometimes the issues appear overwhelming but with your support we will be successful, as we were successful in the Rasouli case. Donations can be made online at: http://www.euthanasiaprevention.on.ca/Donations.htm or by phoning the office or by mail.
Thank you for your support
