CALL FOR PAPERS:
Cornwall Disability Research Network 2011 Conference: A Celebration of Disability Arts, Culture and Performance.
Conference theme: Arts, Media, Representation and Disability.
Venue: The Keay Theatre, Cornwall College Campus, St Austell
Date: Friday, 28th of October 2011
The theme of this year's conference is a celebration of the rich diversity of disabled practitioners within the field of arts and the media, the way arts and the media represent disabled people and the use of arts and media as a form of resistance by disabled people. Possible themes could be:
The work of disabled artists/writers/performers both current and historical (eg Frieda Kahlo, Maria Blanchard, Degas, Monet, Christy Brown, Alison Lapper) in a social and/or theoretical context.
Outsider/Raw Art/Art Brut.
Representations of disabled people/disability in art.
Disability Arts: How impairment/disability is reflected in the creative process; the role of disability in the production of art; Disability Arts as a form of protest.
Impact of media and arts representation of disability/impairment on disabled people. This could explore how disablist representations normalise disability hate crime and facilitate policy and legislation attacks on disabled people.
Presentation slots will be 20 minutes with an additional 10 minutes for questions.
We are also have exhibition space around the conference area for practising artists to exhibit and for practitioners in other art forms to publicise shows, events or services.
It should be stressed that this conference is about sociological and not medical/biological aspects of disability and it is important that presentations fit into a broadly social model ethos. Presentations by Disabled people and students are especially welcome.
Due to over-subscription in previous years, the conference has moved to a larger and more accessible venue at The Keay Theatre in St Austell. Interested parties need to submit an abstract of up to 300 words by August 26th 2011, emailed to me at [log in to unmask]
The conference is historically well attended by disabled people, social work/social science students, disability studies academics, disabled people's organisations and carers.
If you could please disseminate this to interested parties, I would very much appreciate it.
Kind regards, Liz Ellis, CDRN.
