Subject: Riots
Thinking back to the spring time there was a thread here suggesting that as
archaeologists we had been remiss in not investigating a Royal Wedding. I
don't want to suggest that we should have all been out archaeologising
during the recent Riots in English cities (those of us in English cities)
but I did wonder whether anyone has done any archaeological work on the many
riots (anywhere in the world) of the last 20 years? Historians (even
bigoted Tudorists) have been asked for their opinions, and asked to compare
them to earlier riots, and geographers have been asked about spatial
patterning, but I haven't seen anything archaeological despite the obvious
materiality of the event. So two requests, 1) references 2) what can
archaeology do with riots, and when should we do it?
